On November 5th Martin Gill and Sarah Webb attended a conference organised by The Police Foundation on organised crime. Martin gave a talk with Ian Davidson on the role of money laundering legislation generally and financial investigation specifically in tackling organised crime. Amongst many interesting talks Martin Hewitt from the Metropolitan Police spoke about the police respite and noted that the organised crime threat was different to that of counter terrorism and reasons include the far that the latter has a fairly uniform (or limited range of) aims and fairly limited methods of operation. Organised crime groups work flexibly across jurisdictions in a range of offences categories. Working with other agencies and focussing on prevention were amongst the strategies discussed.
